Humana's Bonnie C. Hathcock
named 2007 HR Executive of the Year
LOUISVILLE,
Ky. - October 12, 2007 - Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced
today that Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer
Bonnie C. Hathcock has been named HR Executive magazine's 2007
HR Executive of the Year. The award was announced and celebrated
at a black-tie dinner yesterday in Chicago.
In
making their selection, judges evaluated candidates in a number
of areas: success in establishing the human resources function
as an integral part of the company, demonstrated leadership skills
and contributions to the HR profession as a whole. Hathcock was
selected by the judges from a group of distinguished HR executives
across all industries nationwide.
"Bonnie
excels at identifying exceptional talent and fostering an environment
where people flourish," said Michael B. McCallister, Humana's
president and chief executive officer. "Through her leadership,
Humana has become a place that welcomes innovative thinkers, encourages
professional growth, and engages associates to create value for
its customers. Our human capital is a competitive asset, and Bonnie
is at the center of that achievement."
"I
am honored to receive this award and thank the judges and HR Executive
Magazine," Hathcock said. "It has been very rewarding
to help create a culture of innovation that drives business results.
In the knowledge economy, a company's success depends on value
creation. Engaged associates are essential to that, and their
engagement is a product of the value a company places on their
competencies and contributions. I'm looking forward to working
with our leadership and with my talented team of associates in
HR to continue driving associate engagement at Humana."
Hathcock
joined Humana in 1999 as senior vice president and chief human
resources officer. Shortly thereafter, she was responsible for
the creation of MOCHA, Humana's internal benefit structure designed
to offer More Options and Choices for Humana Associates. This
initiative was a pivotal moment in the evolution of Humana's consumerism
focus, partnering with Humana associates to better understand
health care consumers and address challenges of cost and access
-- challenges Humana itself faced. Humana established a business
model of "laboratory to showcase," an innovative approach
to developing health benefits which has lowered costs and improved
experience for Humana's members and made the company an industry
leader.
Hathcock
has also championed the transformation of Humana's culture, achieving
change through a focus on leadership and professional development.
Guided by the idea that associate value creates customer value
which in turn leads to shareholder value, she instituted a comprehensive
learning environment for all associates. She also created the
Humana Leadership Institute to expand the capabilities of the
company's leaders. Since its creation, more than 2,000 leaders
have attended specialized programs designed to build business
knowledge and leadership capabilities.
Hathcock
came to Humana after serving as vice president of human resources
and development for US Airways from 1997 to 1999. Prior to that,
she served as the vice president of human resources for Siemens
Rolm Communications, a role to which she was appointed after her
success in sales and marketing with Xerox Corporation. Hathcock
credits Siemens executive Peter Pribilla with believing in her
capabilities and allowing her career to follow new directions.
